Did you know after the shooting in Parkland, Florida, George and Amal Clooney donated $500,000 in their children’s’ name towards the March for Our Lives demonstration? The recent 2018 AFI Lifetime Achievement Award recipient attended the “March” that was held on March 24th. Mr. Clooney was quoted saying he believed this march was for the youth and this is the time for the young people of Parkland to make their voices heard. “It’s so much more effective if it’s young people,” he wrote. Basically saying that he and Amal would be there in support but wanted to give the youth the platform to speak to the adults.
“Amal and I are so inspired by the courage and eloquence of these young men and women from Stoneman Douglas High School,” the couple tell Us Weekly in a statement. “Our family will be there on March 24 to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people from all over the country, and in the name of our children Ella and Alexander, we’re donating 500,000 dollars to help pay for this groundbreaking event. Our children’s lives depend on it.” ~George Clooney~
On February 14, 2018 a student by the name of Nikolas Cruz was arrested and charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder after police said he opened fire with an AR-15 rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School killing 17 students and teachers and injuring 14 others. This tragic event led to the inspiration for the “March for Our Lives” movement. This movement was led by the students of Parkland, Fl and has grown to unite students across the U.S.
On March 24th 2018 students across the U.S. took to the streets of Washington D.C. along with thousands of students in school demonstrating walk outs at the same exact time on April 20, 2018 to demand action on gun control. One hundred percent of students held the demonstration and performed the speeches.
“Not one more. We cannot allow one more child to be shot at school. We cannot allow one more teacher to make a choice to jump in front of a gun to save the lives of their students. We cannot allow one more family to wait for a call or text that never comes. Our children and teachers are dying. We must make it our top priority to save these lives. A child should not fear a bullet on their walk home. Although this movement has stemmed from children, we are not fighting for just children. All lives are precious, and our country must make the safety of its citizens a number one priority.” ~Mission Statement~
March for Our Lives has also created a “Road To Change” movement for the summer. Gathering young people to get them educated, registered, and motivated to vote. Traveling to 27 congressional districts in FL and over 50 spots in 20 states holding rallies encouraging the community to engage in voter registration for the elections coming up.
“When people across the country rallied at the March For Our Lives just over 2 months ago, we showed our politicians that we refuse to accept gun violence as an unsolvable issue. Now it’s time to turn our energy into action.” ~March for Our Lives~
With the multitude of school shootings across the U.S., it takes donations from celebrities like George and Amal Clooney to help turn tragedy into triumph to help fund the March for Our Lives in their movement.
